A belated Happy New Year to you all. You will have to forgive the radio silence but we have been busy these past couple of months: the coldest months of the year are when our work is needed by the homeless of Bucharest the most.

Anyway, here is a quick look at what we’ve been up to:

Back in December we held our annual Christmas Soup Kitchen at Gara de Nord. More than 300 hot meals and Christmas gifts were offered to the homeless. The event was supported by the General Directorate of Social Assistance for the Municipality of Bucharest, Jandarmeria Bucuresti, InteCcontinental hotel and the British Embassy. Other companies and many individuals donated cash, food to take away, hot drinks and warm clothes, as a simple gesture of solidarity with those experiencing homelessness.

Volunteers included the British Ambassador to Romania, Paul Brummell, the General Manager of the InterContinental hotel in Bucharest, Stefan Frank, and the Pro TV news presenter Amalia Enache.

To all of you who took part, we thank you for being part of such a great event and for offering a small yet crucial amount of joy to those in need.

On January 7th we reached a small milestone over on Facebook, with our page getting its 500th like: if you you have not yet become one of our Facebook fans, do so right now: it’s where you can best keep up with everything that’s going on at Casa Ioana. If you are on Twitter, you should also make sure you follow us there, too.

Last week we were at Mojo for the first Mojo Charity Quiz of the year. Held every two weeks the quiz benefits three charities, of which Casa Ioana is one. Almost €900 was raised, and we want to thank everyone concerned: from organizers to sponsors, participants and volunteers. Our share of the amount raised will be spent on buying and replacing two central heating radiators in our family refuge.

The next quiz night is on January 28th. You can book a table at quiz@mojomusic.ro. See you there!

Finally, a word about a fantastic project being run by Bridging the Gap: The Furniture Project. Read all about it here, and if you do have any furniture you no longer need laying around, get in touch.
